There wasn’t even time for an ellipses to appear. The text came back that quickly—and in shouty capitals.

Jaron: FIND SOMEWHERE PRIVATE AND CALL ME. NOW!

Private. What was his definition of private? We were in the middle of the pier.

“Where are you?” he asked in place of a hello.

“Just outside of the trailer. We’re here for Access Hollywood.” I added, just in case anyone could overhear I didn’t want to sound out of the ordinary.

“Okay just answer yes or no. Who knows who is around. So, Beckett is petrified of the ocean. Like panic attack level fear. You need to pull the interview. Make up any excuse possible. Tell them he has the shits for all I care but bail on this interview.”

Holy shit.

“He’s an—”

“Lane, I literally just told you yes or no answers. Yes he is a swimmer, in a pool. The whole reason he got into swimming was because his parents went to Florida on a vacation and he almost drowned. They’ve tried everything. Behavior therapy, hypnosis, you name it. The fear is deeply ingrained somewhere. And Villa fucking knows that too.”

“We’re just hanging out for the next thirty minutes or so,” I tried to sound bored even though my heart was in my throat. “ESPN and Sports Illustrated apparently are like stuck in traffic or something. Who knew they were so important that an entire filming schedule had to be held for them?”

“You’re fucking with me?” I heard him slam something—my guess would be something on his desk. “This was a mother fucking set up.”

“Well I should probably get back inside. I can hear my laptop dinging nonstop. Spending three days away from the office has created such a backlog of work! Did you see Beckett’s TikTok? He hit five million this morning. Crazy right?”

“Shit. Stay by your phone while I figure this shit out. Don’t pull him yet. Do whatever you can to keep Beckett calm and whatever you do, don’t tell him about Charley.”

He disconnected. I kept the fake chatter up for another few minutes, discussing the spike in sales—probably a little too loudly but fuck all of them. Beckett hadn’t moved from his chair. In fact I couldn’t even tell if he’d blinked since I left.

“Beckett?” I crouched in front of him and ran my hand along his cheek. That at least brought his focus back.

“Hi.” I tried to smile with a serenity I didn’t feel. “I just did the walk through with the producers. Do you want to go over it?”

“Lane, I don’t think I can do this. I’m serious. Call Jaron, he can figure out a way to get me out of here.”

I cradled his face, caressing his jawline, trying anything to get him focused on me.

“Jaron is going to call me back in ten minutes. I already talked to him. It’s all good. We’re figuring it out. But your pulse is way too high and I’m afraid you’re going to stroke out. Can you take some deep breaths with me?”

I held his face at an angle so that he could watch me breathe.
