There wasnât even time for an ellipses to appear. The text came back that quicklyâand in shouty capitals.
Jaron: FIND SOMEWHERE PRIVATE AND CALL ME. NOW!
Private. What was his definition of private? We were in the middle of the pier.
âWhere are you?â he asked in place of a hello.
âJust outside of the trailer. Weâre here for Access Hollywood.â I added, just in case anyone could overhear I didnât want to sound out of the ordinary.
âOkay just answer yes or no. Who knows who is around. So, Beckett is petrified of the ocean. Like panic attack level fear. You need to pull the interview. Make up any excuse possible. Tell them he has the shits for all I care but bail on this interview.â
Holy shit.
âHeâs anââ
âLane, I literally just told you yes or no answers. Yes he is a swimmer, in a pool. The whole reason he got into swimming was because his parents went to Florida on a vacation and he almost drowned. Theyâve tried everything. Behavior therapy, hypnosis, you name it. The fear is deeply ingrained somewhere. And Villa fucking knows that too.â
âWeâre just hanging out for the next thirty minutes or so,â I tried to sound bored even though my heart was in my throat. âESPN and Sports Illustrated apparently are like stuck in traffic or something. Who knew they were so important that an entire filming schedule had to be held for them?â
âYouâre fucking with me?â I heard him slam somethingâmy guess would be something on his desk. âThis was a mother fucking set up.â
âWell I should probably get back inside. I can hear my laptop dinging nonstop. Spending three days away from the office has created such a backlog of work! Did you see Beckettâs TikTok? He hit five million this morning. Crazy right?â
âShit. Stay by your phone while I figure this shit out. Donât pull him yet. Do whatever you can to keep Beckett calm and whatever you do, donât tell him about Charley.â
He disconnected. I kept the fake chatter up for another few minutes, discussing the spike in salesâprobably a little too loudly but fuck all of them. Beckett hadnât moved from his chair. In fact I couldnât even tell if heâd blinked since I left.
âBeckett?â I crouched in front of him and ran my hand along his cheek. That at least brought his focus back.
âHi.â I tried to smile with a serenity I didnât feel. âI just did the walk through with the producers. Do you want to go over it?â
âLane, I donât think I can do this. Iâm serious. Call Jaron, he can figure out a way to get me out of here.â
I cradled his face, caressing his jawline, trying anything to get him focused on me.
âJaron is going to call me back in ten minutes. I already talked to him. Itâs all good. Weâre figuring it out. But your pulse is way too high and Iâm afraid youâre going to stroke out. Can you take some deep breaths with me?â
I held his face at an angle so that he could watch me breathe.
